The Purpose Of The Music Video

Intro: In 1941 the first form of music videos emerged when juke boxes called the 'panoram soundie'
plays short clips to music. 21 years later shows such as 'top of the pops' and Ready! Steady! Go! emerge bringing music to the small screen. In 1964 The Beatles create one of the first ever Music films called 'a hard days night' then moving on four years later music directors start to become a thing when the rolling stones collaborate with french director luc Godard to make the video for 'sympathy of the devil', In 1970 the record industry discovers they can now promote bands with short promo videos which can instead replace live performances. Since then music industry has drastically changed with music videos being a groundbreaking form of visual entertainment. The purpose of this essay is to present and justify the purpose of the music video and what benefits it brings to the artists and the industry.

Promotion of artists: When music videos are made, in most circumstances it is made to promote the artists in some way and also the director, this is done to make sure the artist gets the popularity and coverage they need to sell things such as albums, tour dates and singles, for example; bands such as 'The Hives' and 'The Black Keys' have been able to promote themselves as a band by using their logos and merchandise to promote themselves. with the example of 'The Black Keys' video, we can see the promotion of the artist in various ways such as; the artist are always constantly are the main center of the video they are mostly on camera the entire video, we see shows they are performing at, we see merchandise, drum skins, billboards, performance equipment with their logo imprinted on the majority of them. This promotes the artist because it shows off their line of work and visually gets them in your mind from the use of advertising the band and their name,

Producer strategies. producers uses certain strategies to promote their artists, this usually is the contrast between what publicity the artist gets and how they use that to the advantage of how the video is made creating even more publicity. But if a band would equally like to seem even more unique but they do not have the publicity behind them they would find an even more unique way of creating a video. For example of the independent artist, around in may 2015, the Brit awards had taken place, Kanye West had performed his song all day on the event, he had various UK grime on stage with him, one of them happened to be a small south London rapper known as 'Stormzy' because of what took place many people criticized stormzy calling him a 'back up dancer' so in response to this he released a song called 'shut up' the video featured him in a park calling out his haters. Because of this feedback stormzy received it allowed him to promote himself in a way that allowed him to reach a much bigger audience because the incident that took p-lace at the brit awards was viewed by millions of people, over artist with massive fan bases were also part of the incident such as Kanye west and Skepta and because of this to date it is stormzy's highest viewed video and sold single.

Producer strategies can also be a way an artist image is changed in a way that allows them to change their image and sales as an artist, for example;  The band 'The 1975' originally were know as a small progressive indie band known as 'The Big sleep' but due to a low success rate they had reinvented themselves as a indie pop group called the 1975. Their reinvention involved a more poppy style of rock that was made and image which consisted of black leather jackets and ripped jeans, to date they are one of the most popular bands in the UK headlining festivals such as Park life and latitude festival

The Extension of Media Outlets

In this generation the music industry has changed dramatically from the ways we listen to our music, we have streaming (spotify, apple music etc) online video outlets (Youtube, vimeo etc) Telvision channels (MTV, Kerrang, Scuzz, etc) Digital nedia (Itunes, Google Play etc) Social Media and Radio (BBC R1, Kiss, Heart, etc) there is also pyhsical media such as CD's and Vinyls even though the decrease of sales in physical media has became very apprent since the emergence of digital music, even over the last five years Vinyl has slightly came back in sales due to authenticity.

Because of this artists like to refrence all the places where their content can be found to be purchase or streamed for example if you look at any artist on outube we can see this is the case.

Synergy

Another form of Synergy would be product placement and brands intertwining together to trying to appeal to a greater audience and bringing in the most amount of income they possibly can, it is also important for the brand to still appeal to the consumer

this has happened in many circumstances but this has been achieved with an artist by the Name of Jack Garrat who before had been a very small indie artist, but since backing from stations such as radio 1 and much critical acclaim Jack had built up a reputation as a very creative artist and because of this rise he had recently made a music video collaboration with Lee Cooper called 'Strong Enough' which was added to the lee cooper collection,This is many ways has boosted the success of the artist and the company because both would have increased sales in both areas.
